The Next Right Step 👣

Hey Reader,

The last 7 days knocked me sideways. Last week, I wrote you a message that I planned to send after taking a nap. That nap ended up being 3 hours long and I accepted that rest was the priority. Then by Monday, I was not feeling any better and decided to test for COVID.

Welp, this mama tested positive!! 16 days into the new school year, and all of my plans got smaller out of necessity instead of choice, including parenting my daughter this week. Eclipse season asked for surrender, and my body backed that up whether I was ready or not.

Even as I still recover, I found myself back on Linkedin yesterday. Confession: I re-downloaded the app since I haven’t had the energy to be at my laptop.

When I opened the app, a post from Wannette Doerrfeld, stopped me in my tracks. She wrote about the season she’s been in, growth, change, more than a few growing pains, and how our work together helped her turn uncertainty into aligned action while she opened Verve’s physical location and built partnerships that actually reflect her values.

What landed for me was her closing line: the magic is taking it anyway. Meaning the next right step, even when it’s smaller than you think.

That’s really the whole season in one sentence. Not the big leap, the small step taken anyway. The rest this week wasn’t a detour from the work, it was the work. Justice & Joy even when sick.

If you’re standing at your own crossroads, or carrying something that feels bigger than you can untangle alone, that’s exactly what I’m here for—to be your thought partner and coach. 💖

You’ve got two options:

  1. Hit reply and share what you’re carrying and ready to put down. Or..
  2. Book time on my calendar to talk about and figure out what’s the next small step for you!

May you rest well this long weekend!

Rooted in love. Blooming in liberation. 🌻

Hey Reader, Reclamation is easier to proclaim than to live. 😅 I came home from the retreat glowing, naming stillness and no longer fighting. This week's Chase Center Watch Party Joy! Then, the mamaverse tapped me on the shoulder and asked, "Are you sure?!" And honestly, that's how it goes. You get tested on whether you mean it. My test showed up this week as a big change for my kid all while getting sick: a house move, and a new person moving into the other home. Shifting dynamics. What I'm...

Mama J preparing to receive the rose shower coming here way at the Rest + Reclamation Retreat

Hey Reader, Last week I sent you a message on Day 2 of the Rest + Reclamation Retreat that was pre-written and scheduled for you to receive at our regularly scheduled day and time. A sunflower offering to the land. I’m already dreaming of going back as it exceeded every expectation I had. I’ll be honest, I had only really thought about my own rest going in. I knew I’d be with Black women. What I didn’t anticipate was how our host, and the four facilitators would truly be one circle of 20. The...

Hey Reader, By the time you read this, I'll be at a Rest + Reclamation Retreat for 4 days with 14 fellow Black women activists, sponsored, held, resting on purpose. Here's how I got here. The same dear friend who thanked me for my authenticity a couple weeks back is the one who nominated me for this opportunity. In fact, I found out about it and the next steps while I was in bed with COVID, and my first thought was… 💭 How am I going to be sick and out of commission for ten days and then go...
