Reclamation is easier to proclaim 🗣️

Hey Reader,

Reclamation is easier to proclaim than to live. 😅 I came home from the retreat glowing, naming stillness and no longer fighting.

Then, the mamaverse tapped me on the shoulder and asked, "Are you sure?!" And honestly, that's how it goes. You get tested on whether you mean it.

My test showed up this week as a big change for my kid all while getting sick: a house move, and a new person moving into the other home. Shifting dynamics.

What I'm sitting with is how to support my kid through a change that nobody wants to talk about beyond the logistics. The news arrived as a last-minute detail passed along to me, and the feelings underneath it are left to figure themselves out. I'm keeping the details of this one close, because it's my kid's story too. ❤️‍🔥

What I can share is the practice: I can't control how the change gets communicated, but I can make sure there's a place in my home where it's okay to talk about it, or not talk about it, at my kid's pace. That's the loving accountability I keep coming back to in this series.

If you want to watch me work through it in real time, the full playlist is here: Parenting Across Two Homes. It has Part 1 and Part 2 of How to Stop Your Co-Parent from Ruining Your Day, plus some shorts where I'm sharing more of the in-progress story. 😔

An invitation 💌 For the next 30 days...

I’m hosting Research & Loving Accountability calls 🎃✨🍂

Come share your lived experience and perspective during/after divorce. As a thank you, I'll spend 20 minutes listening to a current challenge and reflecting back the loving accountability I'd offer. 🫶🏽

If you're a parent navigating two homes, a challenge in a non-traditional family structure or you work with families who are, grab a spot here.

My Justice & Joy This Week

The next chapter of my rest journey is all about: Stillness, time in nature, and creative rest. Today, I stilled my mind during a 1100 yard swim in the crisp air that then flowed into an afternoon artist date.

Here's what I'm asking myself and inviting you to do: Where is life testing what you proclaimed two weeks ago under the dark moon?

Hit reply and let’s talk about it. I read and respond to every one.

rooted in love. blooming in liberation. 🌻

Mama J preparing to receive the rose shower coming here way at the Rest + Reclamation Retreat

Hey Reader, Last week I sent you a message on Day 2 of the Rest + Reclamation Retreat that was pre-written and scheduled for you to receive at our regularly scheduled day and time. A sunflower offering to the land. I’m already dreaming of going back as it exceeded every expectation I had. I’ll be honest, I had only really thought about my own rest going in. I knew I’d be with Black women. What I didn’t anticipate was how our host, and the four facilitators would truly be one circle of 20. The...

A gif of an half avocado meditating

Hey Reader, By the time you read this, I'll be at a Rest + Reclamation Retreat for 4 days with 14 fellow Black women activists, sponsored, held, resting on purpose. Here's how I got here. The same dear friend who thanked me for my authenticity a couple weeks back is the one who nominated me for this opportunity. In fact, I found out about it and the next steps while I was in bed with COVID, and my first thought was… 💭 How am I going to be sick and out of commission for ten days and then go...

The Temperance Card from Daughter's of the Moon Tarot

Hey Reader, Last week's email felt intense looking back at it, and this week I want to talk about something quieter: temperance. How I've been tempering what I'm building next, and a lot more of the behind-the-scenes than usual. Turns out, I really stepped into my Temperance energy by being honest with my kid about my need and why it was important to do so. The details are less important than the lesson that parenting is reminding me of the countless opportunities to temper all the elemental...
